Why We Should Be Concerned About Ron DeSantis

Ron DeSantis has been hailed as a political figure by some right-wingers who no longer put their trust in Donald Trump that, if elected as president, could reignite the glory of the Republican party that has been tainted by former president Donald Trump, who has smeared the party's reputation due to instances such as the January 6 U.S. Capitol Attack, which he has recently been indicted for.

The fact that the Republican party, which has lately had its members trying to pass legislation that mirrors that of Nazi Germany, is actively cheering on Ron DeSantis should be a cause of concern. Ron DeSantis winning the 2024 presidential election would create a catastrophic future for the United States. As seen with the recent legislation that has been passed in Florida, such as the 'Don't Say Gay' bill, which was expanded through 12th grade back in April, and the recent approval for PragerU curriculum to be able to be taught in schools, America under the rule of Ron DeSantis will result in a hyper-conservative country that indoctrinates students with a white-washed version of history and one that only values wealthy white men

While Ron DeSantis' support for such legislation (as listed above) is a cause for concern, his past should raise even further concerns about why as much effort as possible should be put in to avoid his election as president.

Ron DeSantis graduated from Yale University in 2001 with a history degree and later graduated from Harvard Law School in 2005; during his second year at Harvard Law School, he enlisted in the Navy. He was later sent to the notorious Guantánamo Bay detention camp in 2006, where he worked in the JAG corps. While there, prisoners had to be forcibly fed in response to hunger strikes, something which has been condemned by various groups as a form of torture.

As a result of these hunger strikes, three prisoners known as Ali Abdullah Ahmed, Mani Shaman al-Utaybi, and Yasser Talal al-Zahrani were placed in Alpha block, where socialization was forbidden. Oddly enough, 72 hours later, on June 9, 2006, the inmates were found dead in their cells hanging from their necks. Ron DeSantis became involved in the investigation of the deaths of the prisoners after Captain Patrick McCarthy had him collect evidence for the investigation.

Former inmate Ahmed Abdel Aziz reports that prior to the deaths of the prisoners, DeSantis treated the prisoners in a caring manner, where he would listen to their complaints and made sure things went smoothly. However, after June 9, 2006, Ron DeSantis' behavior changed drastically, and he began giving prisoners the silent treatment.

DeSantis actively plays down the accusations he has concerning the time he spent at the Guantánamo Bay detention camp, saying it is only being done to tarnish his reputation. This is not the only instance in which DeSantis has brushed off controversial incidents. Last year, DeSantis had appointed Jeffery Moore as a Gadsden County Commissioner. Moore later resigned from his position after an old photo of him donning a Ku Klux Klan costume at a Halloween party began recirculating the internet. When asked about the incident, a representative of DeSantis, Taryn Fenske, did not clarify anything about the situation, stating that they were business with preparing for a hurricane.

Another instance of why Ron DeSantis should be a cause of concern for everyone is when he believed that people should be permitted to be in office and not have to resign due to past controversies. This is in reference to the resignation of Mike Ertel, who had been appointed as the Secretary of State but resigned after photos of him at a Halloween party dressed up as a victim from the deadly Hurricane Katrina in blackface resurfaced to the public.

Our nation should not elect someone who actively censors any information he does not approve of in schools, nor someone who has brushed off serious incidents. Ron DeSantis has proven to be an unreliable person to lead our country and thus should not be elected.
